On May 15 around 10:30 in the evening, Talbert was shot twice in the head while sitting in his vehicle on North La Brea Avenue in Inglewood right outside a corner liquor store. There have been some speculative comments that suggested M-Bone may have been killed by a jealous fan, but police contend that they still have no motive or suspect for the killing. Gossip site TMZ reported that a man only known as “Bubba” – who appeared in a video with CSD – was in front of the store when the shooting happened and was also injured by glass from the gunfire.
Cali Swag District – a group best known for the platinum smash hit “Teach Me How To Dougie” – would not be considered by even the most casual fan as a group that would attract or even promote this manner of violence. Even more tragic, Talbert’s life and career was just beginning to take off with his crew set to release their debut album The Kickback later this year. The timing of the killing has inspired some to ask why would such a fun-loving group of young men who inspired a nationwide dance craze be at the epicenter of a violent incident such as this.
Signed to Capitol Records, Cali Swag District made their name with the platinum dance hit "Teach Me How to Dougie," an ode to the dance popularized by hip-hop legend Doug E. Fresh. The record's remix featured Jermaine Dupri, B.o.B, Bow Wow and Red Cafe, and their debut album, The Kickback, is slated for an unspecified 2011 release.
